Letting students take days off who are dealing with mental health issues? At least some states—Utah, Oregon and Minnesota—are trying to get ahead of the game and not wait for a full-blown crisis to emerge. These states now allow students to legitimately take days off for mental health issues. Aside from its benefits for individual students, this action has the potential of helping to destigmatize mental illness and placing it on a par with physical illnesses. Advocated by many teenagers, let us hope that this legislation heads us in the right direction in stemming the tide of anxiety and depression that plagues this generation.
